“Indians do not create unrest on the streets”: Piyush Goyal praises the Indian diaspora amid protests in Europe

The minister’s remarks come at a time when protests against the Election Commission have erupted in India.

Indian Union Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal stated on Monday that Indian society is a “peace-loving community,” and that Indians “do not take to the streets to disrupt social order.”

Goyal’s remarks in Berlin come at a time when protests are unfolding across France, Italy, and other parts of Europe. Meanwhile, back in India, protests have also erupted, directed against the Election Commission.

“An important statistic is the level of respect you command in this country… The good thing is that you are well-regarded here—very well-regarded. They know you won’t engage in vandalism. They know you won’t take to the streets to disrupt public order, as we have seen elsewhere in Europe. They know that the Indian people and the Indian community are peace-loving. They live with their families and take care of their families,” Goyal said, adding that there might be occasional exceptions “beyond our control.”
